MediaTek-based devices can be switched to a MediaTek Boot ROM mode. This mode allows users to perform advanced operations, such as firmware flashing and low-level communication with the device.
Before it will start the data-extraction process for a MediaTek-based device, Passware Kit Mobile requires users to switch the device to Boot ROM mode and to prepare it. The method for doing this varies depending on the device manufacturer and the firmware version installed.
Passware Tip: If Passware drivers are installed properly, the device will show in Device Manager in Windows as MediaTek device (Boot ROM mode).
The following methods are supported in PKM:
-
Volume buttons
Easy to perform. Available for a limited set of devices. -
Preloader mode
Easy to perform. Available for a limited set of devices. -
Test points
Complicated to perform. Requires disassembly skills and known test points, which may cause irreversible damage to the device. Applicable to most devices.
Passware Tip: Start with the first method and then proceed to the next one if the previous process fails. Click the ‘Try another’ link on the instructions page to select a different method.
Steps to access Boot ROM mode
Before you start, make sure the device is in a working state, boots correctly into the Android system, and is fully charged.
Volume buttons method
- Turn off the device.

NOTE: Third-party tools may install COM drivers on Windows for MediaTek-based devices, which may interfere with the Passware Kit Mobile drivers. Uninstall the COM drivers via Device Manager before proceeding with PKM.
Passware Tip: PKM USB drivers are automatically installed during the device preparation, but they can also be manually installed from the Tools | Options | Troubleshooting menu.
Preloader mode method
- Turn off the device.
- Connect to the computer with PKM using a USB cable.
- Wait for up to 10 seconds while the device is booting in Boot ROM mode.
- Once the “Preparing the device” status appears, wait for it to complete.
NOTE: This method is available for a limited set of MediaTek-based devices, and it is recommended to make at least 3 attempts before trying the next method.
Test points method
- Turn off and disassemble the device.
- Ground the test points.
Passware Tip: Check our test-point gallery or search the internet for the test points for your device model.
