Which MediaTek chipsets are supported?

How do I put an MediaTek-based device into Boot ROM mode?

The following methods are supported in PKM:

  • Volume buttons
    Easy to perform. Available for a limited set of devices.
  • Preloader mode
    Easy to perform. Available for a limited set of devices.
  • Test points
    Complicated to perform. Requires disassembly skills and known test points, which may cause irreversible damage to the device. Applicable to most devices.

What mobile applications are supported for decryption?

In addition to passcode recovery, Passware Kit Mobile detects the installed applications and performs instant decryption, if possible. Otherwise, the recovery process begins. The decrypted device data is typically saved as an EXT4 file system image in DD format for the devices with full-disk encryption and in DAR archive for file-based encryption, which is commonly supported by forensic applications for further analysis. Application decryption results are saved as an SQLite database.

NoteThe encryption key signalsecret_keystore_key.bin extracted from the keystore is saved in unprotected\applications\0\Signal along with the decrypted signal.db file. To decrypt the database with third-party tools, use the following files: signalsecret_keystore_key.bin and org.thoughtcrime.securesms/shared_prefs/org.thoughtcrime.securesms_preferences.xml.

What encryption methods can be used on MediaTek-based devices?

The following encryption methods can be used on mobile devices with full-disk or file-based encryption:

  • Secure Startup 

    Passware TipInstant decryption is available for phones with disabled Secure Startup
  • PIN, Pattern, Password, Knock code (LG only)
Passware TipFor some devices, the password type can be found on the device itself at /system/device_policies.xml or lock_settings_db.xml.

Can GPU acceleration be used with MediaTek-based devices? 

For MediaTek-based devices, Passware Kit Mobile performs GPU-accelerated brute-force and distributed password recovery without needing to connect the device.
The recovery speed can be accelerated on NVIDIA and AMD GPUs, reaching 80-200 passwords per second on NVIDIA 2080Ti for smartphones with the Secure Startup option enabled. 
Passware TipFor devices with Secure Startup option disabled, Passware Kit Mobile instantly decrypts user data and subsequently performs the recovery of the user password. Unlock password can be recovered if available.
